Abattoir & Slaughterhouse Wastewater Treatment

Abattoir & Slaughterhouse Wastewater Treatment, meat processing effluents and slaughterhouse wastewater is containing diluted blood, fats, proteins, pathogens, and potential pharmaceuticals for veterinary purposes. As a result, this wastewater contains very high organic loading and nutrient concentrations leading to a highly contaminating effect in water bodies if it is not treated correctly.

Wastewater Treatment Tanks

Enduramaxx works with many abattoir wastewater treatment installers of effluent, wastewater, sludge treatment processes and installations we work with many installers and treated slaughterhouse water treatment companies.

Our tanks for this wastewater treatment industry include:

Wastewater Treatment Processes

Anaerobic wastewater treatment systems are the preferred biological treatment because of their effectiveness in treating high-strength wastewater with less complex equipment requirements. Sources regarding treatment in this field say anaerobic treatment works efficiently with treated effluents, however often require post-treatment to comply with the required discharge limit.

These processes often include:

Preliminary / Primary Treatment of Wastewater

Separation of solids and large particles from the liquid portion with screens, sieves, and strainers.  Other treatment includes flotation and clarification/settlement tanks where heavier particles and sludge sink to the bottom.

Coagulation, Flocculation and Sedimentation

In this process, the colloidal particles in the wastewater are grouped into larger particles called flocs. These particles in the wastewater are negatively charged which make them stable and resistant to aggregation, therefore coagulants with positively charged ions are added.  Various coagulant chemicals are available such as aluminium sulphate, ferric chloride, ferric sulphate, and poly-aluminium chloride.

Dissolved Air Flotation

Dissolved air flotation or DAF technology is the method of liquid-solid separation by air introduction removing fats and greases along with light solids.  Coagulants can be added to increase the effectiveness of the DAF treatment

Biological & Anaerobic Treatment

Secondary treatment is used for the removal of the remaining soluble organic compounds through anaerobic, aerobic, filters and activated sludge tanks. Anaerobic digestion is often the preferred method for these types of wastewater treatment plants due to its effectiveness by anaerobic bacteria in the absence of oxygen and often a low sludge production.

Aeration Tanks for COD reduction

Tanks for COD reduction in industrial wastewater, are fitted with air diffuser systems where the diffusers rest directly on the tank floor so no sedimentation can occur. Air diffusers are typically in the shape of a disc, tube, or plate, which is used to transfer air and that oxygen into the sewage or industrial wastewater. Oxygen is required by microorganisms/bacteria residents in the water to break down the pollutants.

What Is COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand)?

Chemical Oxygen Demand is an important water quality parameter as it provides an index to assess the effect discharged wastewater will have on the environment. High levels of COD levels mean more oxidizable organic material which will reduce dissolved oxygen (DO) levels.  A reduction in DO can lead to anaerobic conditions which are harmful to higher aquatic life forms.
