What Is A Cat 5 Water Tank? UK Water Regulations Require CAT 5 Tanks To Be Used

What is a Cat 5 Water Tank?  A Cat 5 water tank features an air gap between the inlet and outlet to ensure that the water in the tank or cistern does not flow back into the mains supply.  These air gaps are Type AB which meets the relevant Water Regulations requirements for Category 5.

Fluid Category 5 Break Tank

Fluid Category 5 AB Air Gap Break Tanks are required for the installation and use of cold water storage cisterns and sectional tanks connected to the public water supply. More details on installations that come under the scope of fluid category 5 are available here.

Insulated CAT 5 Water Tanks

Insulated Fluid Category 5 AB Air Gap Break Tank is required where the tank is installed in locations such as plant rooms, outside in sunlight where the ambient height outside the tank could possibly cause the water in the tank to rise with a risk of legionella. More details on managing this in hot and cold water systems are available here.

Installation and use of cold water storage cisterns and sectional tanks connected to the public water supply must comply with Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 in England and Wales and the technically identical Scottish Water Byelaws. In order to meet these requirements, Fluid Category 5 Break Tanks must be used in this instance.
