Using algae treatment for phosphorus & pollutants removal
Using algae treatment for phosphorus & pollutants removal, algae are known for their ability to remove pollutants through a process called eutrophication. Algae growing naturally in watercourses is a result of nutrients and particulates which it can feed on. Eutrophication can be applying it on the wastewater treatment and water industry to reduce the high levels or sometimes remove phosphorus and pollutants before final effluent increasing the water quality before it is discharged to the watercourse from sewage treatment sources.
Using algae treatment for phosphorus removal is significantly more environmentally friendly than other methods which require chemicals including biosorption of heavy metals. Microalgae can be used for wastewater treatment systems for the removal of heavy metal ions, solutions, and pathogens from wastewater. Microalgae-based wastewater treatment relies on the ability of phototrophic microorganisms to supply oxygen to pollutant degraders and enhance the removal of nutrients and pathogens through the process. Microalgae are small (1-50 µm) unicellular photosynthetic microorganisms with high photosynthetic rates which allow them to convert sunlight into high rates of biomass growth.
What is Phosphorus in Wastewater?
Phosphorus in wastewater is usually present in the form of organic compounds and in the form of plant nutrients – nitrogen, ammonia and nitrates – which can be toxic to fish through its oxygen demand in the water. This process of phosphorus removal increases the volume and weight of sludge reducing costs of disposal and making water safe to release.
What is Biosorption in Algae Treatment?
Biosorption is the process used by microalgae in the removal of heavy metals from aqueous media. It offers an efficient and cost-effective alternative to conventional remediation techniques and wastewater treatment processes. This microalga can be used as a feedstock for biofuel production and biomass production through the ion nutrients and ratios of wastewater and organic matter from micro-and macronutrients it has absorbed.
Conical Tanks for Microalgae Cultivation
Conical tanks can be used for microalgae cultivation in laboratories for growing algae in aqueous solutions. Depending on the application, production of microalgae is carried out in smaller steep-sided conical tanks are used for plant growth and cultivation, whereas medium and larger tanks are used as photobioreactor tank and for treatment and settlement tanks in the process.
Conical Tanks for Microalgae Photobioreactors
The conical tank can be used as photobioreactor for cultivating algae as algae require constant light to maximise effectiveness. Although as with all tank farms there can be large setup costs with storage tanks, complex equipment, light requirements, Enduramaxx can help to provide customised tank options to suit your project. Flanges & pipework can be factory before leaving our factory for quicker onsite installation.
Conical Tanks for Pollutants Removal
Conical tanks have been successfully used as settlement tanks for microalgae as a treatment tank treatment or settlement tank. The shallow cone tanks have been used for cultivating, shallow cone tanks are more effective for water treatment and settlement applications. In a microalgae treatment conical tanks are used for incoming tertiary effluent where algae are added to the effluent. This would then go into the treatment tanks where polished effluent is then discharged.
At this point returned algae go through the conditioning stage where excess algae is harvested and the process is started again.
