Golf Course Irrigation Design

A golf course requires lots of water for the irrigation of tees, approaches, and greens and the grass must be kept in optimum condition for tournament play on the best possible surface. Along with fertiliser and grass seed, irrigation is essential in the preparation and maintenance of courses.
There is a wide range of watering methods from automatic irrigation system controlled by computer to manual watering – both methods rely on a clean and sufficient water supply with enough water pressure. Generally, the best time to water is in the evening as this helps water to the depth of the turf to enough deep rooting rather than just on the surface.
Golf Course Watering Systems
Permanent irrigation systems consist of underground pipes in which the water is sprayed from pop-up sprinklers which are installed on the surface of the course. Water is supplied from a break tank and a water pump is required to power the sprinklers. In some areas, rather than relying on mains water, abstraction licences are available to use water from the borehole as well as rainwater harvesting.
Water Storage Tanks for Golf Course Irrigation Systems
Enough water storage is critical for successful watering and rainwater harvesting is a viable option which as the mains back up a filler valve is used. This allows the tank to save as much rainwater as possible but retain water in the tank for when it required. Above ground, tanks are generally preferred as over underground tanks which can result in increased costs for installation or if a larger volume tank is required.

Fluid Category 5 AB Air Gap Break Tank
The installation and use of cold-water storage cisterns connected to the public water supply must comply with Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 in England and Wales. To meet these requirements, Fluid Category 5 Break Tanks must be used in this instance. Enduramaxx Rainwater Harvesting Tanks
Enduramaxx rainwater harvesting tanks are available for above installations up to 30,000 litres as a single tank and can be interlinked to able to store up to 120,000 litres. Plastic water tanks which are food grade water tanks and designed for drinking water are preferred for ease of installation and water quality over steel water tanks and sectional galvanised steel water tanks as they are a one-piece moulded tank with no liner. This water with filtering and mains top-up can be used as a water supply for cricket pitches, bowling greens and golf course.
