Clarification Tanks – How do they work?

A clarification tank work in its simplicity by permitting the heavier and larger particles to settle to the bottom of the clarifier or cone.  Dirty water or effluent wastewater entered the clarifier through the centre chamber and flows to the bottom of the internal pipe. The detention time causes the suspended particles to fall to the bottom of the cone. Over time the particles form a layer of sludge & settled solids in the cone which requires removal and disposal.  Water that spills over the weir from the clarifier then proceeds through several more stages before being sent for storage for use as drinking water or in wastewater for disposal. Floatable solids are held back by the saw tooth scum/foam wier before the waste water overflows.

Primary Treatment Through Sedimentation

Primary treatment of sewage remove solid, floating and settleable solids through sedimentation. Primary clarifiers reduce the content of suspended solids as well as the pollutant embedded in the suspended solids. Because of the large amount of reagent necessary to treat domestic wastewater, preliminary chemical coagulation and flocculation are generally not used, remaining suspended solids being reduced by following stages of the system. However, coagulation and flocculation can be used for building a compact treatment plant (also called a “package treatment plant”), or for further polishing of the treated water.

Secondary Clarifiers

Sedimentation tanks or settling tanks are sometimes called “secondary clarifiers” and used to remove flocs of biological growth. These are created in some methods of secondary treatment including activated sludge, trickling filters, and rotating biological contactors from wastewater treatment processes.
