Types of Chemical Storage Tanks Explained

Chemical storage tanks are storage vessels used for the storage of chemicals for water treatment, effluent/sludge, acids for process applications and fertilisers industrial uses.  Chemical storage tanks come in different sizes and shapes as horizontal and cylindrical vertical tanks and are categorised into several types based on what is being stored, the location where they are stored and the application, they are being used in.

Chemical storage tanks come in many forms; we look at the most common ones below:

We run over the key points of each type below:

Single Wall Chemical Tanks

Chemical Tanks are available from 50 to 30,000 litres with increased wall thickness for storage of liquids so liquids of specific gravities of 1.5 SG – 2 SG can be stored.  These plastic chemical tanks are rotationally moulded and available in PE and PP for storage of different chemicals and UV stabilised for many years of outside use.

Examples Of Chemicals that can be stored in plastic chemical tanks include Sulphuric acid, Hydrochloric acid, Hydrofluoric acid, Sodium hypochlorite, Sodium hydroxide, Ammonia solution, Ferric sulphate and chloride, Aluminium sulphate, Polymers, PAC.   The extent of the resistance to corrosion of both Polyethylene and Polypropylene is often surprising to those who have historically used stainless steel or GRP.

Bunded Chemical Tanks with Secondary Containment

These self-supporting rotationally moulded one-piece tanks come in a large range of sizes and capacities, with the option to choose between a flat bottom, conical base, or double wall bunded tanks.  Our bespoke concept allows us to tailor-make tanks for the storage of the product to consider chemical resistance, temperature requirements and site conditions ensuring you a suitable product and peace of mind.

Fabricated Tank Secondary Containment Bunds are used in chemical dosing and plant rooms, we often customize these to incorporate pump mounting plates, mixer, and pipe framework to incorporate dosing pump systems. This ensures that the containers and any potential spill zones around the pump system are fully bunded, therefore providing a safe environment for your engineers.

Conical Chemical Tanks

Conical tanks are unique in that their contents discharge completely through a cone point at the centre of their base, instead of an outlet further up on the side of the tank. Their cone base and smooth internal walls ensure complete discharge and are ideal for where the tank needs to be drained or for chemicals which settle out.

Dosing Chemical Tanks

Our chemical dosing tanks include a flat raised section shelf section which can be used to mount equipment on top of the tank. This is ideal for mounting items such as dosing pumps, industrial mixers, and instrumentation.  These tanks are mainly used in the swimming pool, water treatment and dosing industry.

Chemical Mixer Tanks

Mixer tanks & agitators are used by many companies in the fields of process engineering, food, pharmaceuticals, breweries, soft drinks, paints, inks, resins, water, and effluent treatments.  Our mixer vessels are rotationally moulded polyethene tanks that are long-lasting, chemical resistant and in many instances’ food safe.   A wide range of mixers is available to suit your project combining a variety of paddles with high shear and blending in a diverse range of applications.  Industrial mixer & agitators are an essential part of industrial process engineering – from the smallest plant room in which chemical dosing tanks are used to a water treatment plant with the 30,000-litre tanks with side or top mounted mixers.
