Hydrochloric Acid Tanks

Hydrochloric Acid Tanks – Hydrochloric acid is a colourless inorganic chemical system with the formula H2O:HCl. Hydrochloric acid has a distinctively pungent smell and it’s classified as strongly acidic and can attack the skin.

What is Hydrochloric Acid

Hydrochloric acid is the simplest chlorine-based acid system containing water. It is a solution of hydrogen chloride and water, and a variety of other chemical species, including hydronium and chloride ions. Commonly known also as muriatic acid, hydrochloric acid is a strong, mineral acid known for its corrosive properties and general effectiveness across applications.   The chemical formula for hydrochloric acid, HCl, represents the ionic bond between the elements of hydrogen and chlorine to form the compound hydrogen chloride, a gas in its anhydrous form.

When dissolved in water, toxic hydrogen chloride gas will completely dissociate into its constituent ions to form hydrochloric acid. Aqueous HCl has water-like fluidity, colour and appearance and has a sharp, pungent, quickly-irritating odour that increases in hazard with rising solution concentrations.  Hydrochloric acid is an important chemical reagent and industrial chemical, as a descaling agent, a food additive in the production of gelatin.

One of the most important applications of hydrochloric acid is in the pickling of steel, to remove rust or iron oxide scale from iron or steel before subsequent processing, such as extrusion, rolling, galvanizing, and other techniques.

How should hydrochloric Acid be stored?

Successful hydrochloric acid storage incorporates materials and components resistant to the strong acid’s corrosive effects and potential HCl vapours. The container, gaskets, bolts and fittings are resistant in order to maintain their integrity. Storage tanks should be of PE.

The fuming of HCl in increased concentrations can be corrosive to the immediate tank environment and is considered a volatile liquid. Storage tanks should have scrubbers to ensure any emissions are dealt with safely.  Airtight manways and connections are required.

Hydrochloric Acid Fume Mitigation

Hydrochloric acid’s characteristic to generate corrosive HCl gas is the main concern as strong HCl solutions have high vapour pressures. Hydrochloric acid can absorb heat from its environment or from sunlight and increased temperatures will cause increased amounts of HCl gas which when realised to the atmosphere will react with water vapour to produce an HCl acid mist. HCl will react exothermically with react with many metals to generate flammable hydrogen gas, such as iron, tin, aluminium and magnesium.

Hydrochloric Acid Storage Tanks & Secondary Containment

All hydrochloric acid tanks should be bunded and deal with the evolving HCl vapours and the backpressure of a scrubber. Enduramaxx can customise your Hydrochloric Acid Tanks with fittings and pipework to suit your project. When storing Hydrochloric Acid in a chemical storage tank, a fume-tight manway lid cover prevents fumes from escaping the tank.
